U.S.
Government Documents:
Regional Depository Services
The Newark Public Library
5 Washington Street
Newark, NJ 07102
(973) 733-7813
The Newark Public Library has been a Federal Depository since
1906, and in 1963 was designated the Regional Depository for New Jersey.
Regional Depositories receive one copy of every publication distributed
through the Depository Library Program and have the responsibility to retain
these documents permanently. Newark's documents holdings exceed two million
items in various formats, including books, magazines, microforms, CDs,
maps and posters.
The collection includes:
Census and other statistical data and legislative information. One
can find current and historical publications on almost any subject: consumer
and health information, agriculture, business, technology, the environment,
education, the military, international relations, and more. Our older documents
are a rich resource for anyone studying the history of the United States.
 How
to Find a U.S. Government Document at the Newark Public Library
-
Step 1: Look in the Library's online catalog.
Topcat contains information on nearly all of the government publications
the Library has received since 1976. You can search for government documents
by subject, title, author and Superintendent of Documents number. Write
down the title and Superintendent of Documents number of any publications
you would like to use.
-
Step 2: Visit the Reference desk on the second floor of the Main Library.
The Reference desk provides assistance
for government information. The government documents collection is housed
in closed stacks in the basement: the reference staff will help you send
for any publications which interest you. They also have the tools for locating
those publications which are not listed in our online catalog.
-
Are you seeking an older publication, from prior to 1976?
The librarian will help you to use our many paper indexes. The most
popular are the Cumulative Title Index to United States Public Documents,
1789 - 1976, and Cumulative Subject Index to the Monthly Catalog
of United States Government Publications, 1900 - 1971. You can also
check the annual indexes of the Monthly Catalog of United States Government
Publications: these indexes are searchable by author, title and subject.
We also have the CIS U.S. Congressional Serial Set Index, which
is a subject index to congressional reports and documents from 1789 to
1969.
-
Are you seeking a very recent publication (1994 or later)? It
may be available on the Internet. Many publications are equivalent
to their printed counterparts and some are being distributed exclusively
via the Internet. "Hot" documents can often be found on the Internet before
the printed copy arrives at the Library.
-
Some other popular indexes:the CIS Annual which indexes congressional
publications and legislation, the American Statistics Index, the
CIS
U.S. Government Periodicals Index, CCH Congressional Index which
tracks bills and resolutions, CQ Weekly Report, and the Congressional
Quarterly Almanac.
